Full vehicle cyber security testing
HORIBA MIRA is now able to offer full vehicle cyber-security testing to military standards in its large vehicle chamber.
Vehicle engineering research organisation, HORIBA MIRA has entered a partnership with CPTAS (CESG Platform TEMPEST Accreditation Scheme) accredited Secure Systems and Technologies (SST).
As a result of the partnership, MIRA is able to perform full vehicle testing on military vehicles to the TEMPEST standard relating to the susceptibility to hacking of computer and telecommunication systems, including computers, cables, telephones, radios and operating systems.
Such systems emit electromagnetic radiation that can potentially be used illegally if intercepted and correctly interpreted.
The large vehicle test chamber which exists at HORIBA MIRA’s testing centre in Warwickshire will become the first such chamber in the UK to be CPTAS TEMPEST accredited and can be used for testing vehicles weighing up to 90 tonnes. The chamber will be used to perform TEMPEST testing to analyse how vulnerable equipment in military vehicles are to hacking.
Commenting on how the new facility demonstrates HORIBA MIRA’s commitment to military vehicle testing, the organisation’s Business Development Manager for Defence, Nigel Skellern said, “We aim to develop a complete suite of services that delivers accredited platform and component level TEMPEST assessments, providing military manufacturers with the confidence that their vehicles will not be vulnerable to cyber security attacks.”
Explaining the purpose of the partnership further, Richard Mundy, Technical Sales Director at SST added, “Military vehicles carry a large amount of equipment, all emitting different levels of electromagnetic radiation, making the vehicles vulnerable to hacking. This partnership will enable us to ensure that defence vehicles we test have a high level of security and have robust systems to counteract vulnerabilities.”
