LPR engine supports up to 5 megapixel camera resolutions

PlateSmart exhibits latest generation of License Plate Recognition software which supports greater coverage on fewer cameras.

License Plate Recognition (LPR) specialist, PlateSmart, is attending the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) show taking place this week in Orlando, Florida. The company is demonstrating its latest software which supports LPR on IP surveillance cameras of 2, 3 and 5 megapixels.

The significance of this latest generation of the company’s LPR software relates to the surveillance and recognition coverage that can be achieved with IP cameras of such high resolutions. With a broader field of view, megapixel cameras can cover multiple road lanes with just one camera, eliminating the need for multiple sensors.

Situation awareness is maximized with the ability to scan all vehicle plates passing through the field of view of the camera. In additional, the smaller deployment footprint reduces the expense of roadway installations.

LPR (also known as ANPR or Automatic Number Plate Recognition) is widely used in automatic traffic enforcement systems, access control and tolling as well as mobile deployments for improved policing. The ARES software produced by PlateSmart has recently been the subject of a collaborative project with Samsung Techwin to embed the product as an on-board app on the surveillance camera manufacturer’s equipment.

Commenting on PlateSmart’s presence at the IACP event, the company’s CEO, John Chigos stated that the event represents an ideal opportunity for PlateSmart to demonstrate the latest technology to help law enforcement personnel to do their jobs.
