A new report has been released that provides a market forecast for European ITS destined for public transport for the next five years. With an outlook of a market value of a billion and a half Euros by 2016 and a compound growth rate of 15% per annum, the European industry looks healthy despite the continued economic gloom on the continent.
The 190-page report attributes stable public investment policies in the technology throughout the European Union (EU). Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) are seen as providing for the needs of an increasingly mobile population in the region as well as contributing to improvements in transport safety. The general economic benefits to nations of sustainable mobility continue to drive related investment.
Other key factors in the growth of ITS specifically for the public transport sector include the target to double the use of public transport in the EU as expressed by the International Association of Public Transport (UITP or L’Union internationale des transports publics) and the EU backed EBSF or European Bus System of the Future project.
The report examines the vendor base supplying the public transport ITS initiatives as well as the developments in technology that are providing the greatest interest including tracking systems, real-time passenger information systems and the increasing use of smartphone platforms with GPS capability to provide users with accurate and timely information on public transport availability.
