Report examines factors influencing global growth in ANPR
The global growth in ANPR / LPR systems is dissected in a new report detailing key suppliers and factors influencing market trends.
With a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of more than 14% over the next four years, the market for ANPR / LPR systems in the Americas, EMEA and APAC regions is expected to see significantly increased sales relating to the application of the technology for improved national security, according to the “Global Automatic Number Plate Recognition Market” report available from Research and Markets.
Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) or License Plate Recognition (LPR) technology is used in an increasing number of applications for traffic enforcement, the prevention and detection of crime and for private sector access control requirements. When initially introduced some years ago, the ability to read and electronically store vehicle number plate information was a breakthrough in enforcement automation and was quickly adopted for the enforcement of speed and other traffic regulations.
Recognised early as an enabling technology, the applications for ANPR grew swiftly, predominently in the public sector. Since large numbers of crimes involve a vehicle, having the ability to record vehicle identification information and match it to times and locations became an effective method of crime detection for other police departments as well as traffic enforcement.
The private sector was quick to follow with such applications as automatic barrier control based on number plate recognition, other access control techniques, parking control, predictive logistics management at distribution depots and tolling.
According to the report, the main factor which is driving growth in the market up to 2018 is security in the public sector. Securing national infrastructure is of growing importance internationally and ANPR technology provides an effective means of improving security in critical areas.
However, the data privacy concerns relating to the gathering of large amounts of ANPR by Government agencies is cited as being a detractor to market growth as there is uncertainty as to how the balance between security requirements and data privacy will emerge.
The report also includes input and discussion with the main vendors that are active in the market including NDI Recognition Systems and ELSAG North America.
