Smart cars from Daimler to be equipped with built-in navigators

TomTom will be supplying the built-in navigation system for smart cars under new deal signed with Daimler.

The Smart Fortwo and Forfour cars produced by Daimler will be supplied with on-board infotainment systems with built-in navigation functionality supplied by TomTom under a new deal signed between the two companies. The deal affects European cars immediately and those destined for the USA and China from next year.

The car’s “smart media” infotainment system comprises a 7″ (17.8cm) touch screen, voice recognition and smartphone integration as well as the TomTom navigation software, maps and Live Traffic functionality.

Commenting on the new deal, TomTom’s Vice President of Automotive, Jan-Maarten de Vries stated that it is rewarding for the company to extend the relationship it has with Daimler to the Smart range of cars and to help them deliver the kind of user experience that is demanded from infotainment systems. TomTom’s level of consumer insight as well as its software and services makes the company a key partner for Daimler in delivering this user experience.
