WTCC opts for Volvo as race safety car
The Volvo V60 Polestar is this year’s safety car at race events organisated by the World Touring Car Championship.
A high performance Volvo V60 Polestar will be used as the safety car at the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) this season, leading the field ahead of each race and following the cars around the opening lap with the first race taking place the the Paul Ricard circuit in France from the 1st to 3rd April.
The car has been modified with mandatory safety equipment and is being hailed as the safest safety car in the world with a roll cage, rescue and communications equipment that meet the WTCC specifications.
Commenting on the cooperation between Volvo and the WTCC, the company’s Alexander Murdzevski Schedvin said, “It was an easy decision to start a cooperation with the WTCC on the Official Safety Car. This allows us to close the circle from track to road by showcasing customers the take-home alternative of our racing car technology in the form of the Volvo V60 Polestar Safety Car, at the same time being part of the vital and extensive safety work of the championship.”.
Commenting on the long term commitment that Polestar has made to the WTCC, the organisation’s Head of Eurosport Events, François Ribeiro stated, “We welcome Polestar as the new Official Safety Car partner of the WTCC, an exclusive opportunity which will allow the company to promote its extremely safe and high-performing V60 Polestar flagship model around the world.”
Polestar’s heritage of two decades in motorsport was a crucial aspect of the development of the Volvo V60 Polestar, which has been awarded the top five-star rating from vehicle testing organisation, Euro NCAP.
